PCMI Care Management Accreditation Program FAQ's

How many credits do I need to become certified?

Twenty (20) credits – Of those twelve (12) credits must be core courses.

What is a credit worth?

One (1) credit is defined as six (6) hours of instructional time in a PCMI approved course.

What is a "core" course?

Core courses are the crucial courses needed for accreditation. They are the courses that are determined, by PCMI Accreditation Committee, to be the most important courses in building a solid foundation as a care management professional. Examples of core courses are found in the PCMI Care Management Accreditation Program Policies & Guidelines.

How many course completion projects do I need to become certified?

Four approved course completion projects are necessary to become certified.

What does "approved" mean?

Each project submitted must be approved or not approved, by the instructor that taught that class. If a project is not approved it will be returned and it may be resubmitted again with changes.

How do I maintain my certification?

To maintain certification individuals must complete three (3) PCMI approved credits every two (2) years. The date beginning the two-year cycle is the date on which certification was awarded to the individual. The date can be found on the actual certificate.

I received my certificate before the current Accreditation Policies & Guidelines were adopted which require three (3) credits every two (2) years – how does that affect me?

When the new policies were adopted, there was a grace period for those individuals who have started the accreditation process under the old policies. This was done so that these individuals could complete their accreditation process under the rules with which they had started. That grace period has passed, and everyone now in the program who has reached the Certified Care Manager (CCM) status must follow current requirements and complete three (3) credits every two (2) years.

What happens if I do not attend additional courses after I receive my certificate?

Failure to do so will result in the CCM being nullified. In the event that a Certified Care Manager is unable to meet the requirements for maintaining certification, he or she can request in writing to have the opportunity to re-activate. Re-activation will be at the discretion of the Accreditation Committee and reviewed on an individual basis.

How am I to know when I need to attend a course to maintain my certification?

This is your responsibility. Your certificate provides the date to base your two-year maintenance cycle. For example, if you were awarded the CCM on 1/1/2001 (which is found on the certificate), you will need to complete three credits before 1/2/2003.
